Sciatica is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve which is the longest nerve in the body and runs from the low back through the buttocks, down the leg and into the foot and toes. It is usually caused by one of four things:
- A disc herniation in the lumbar spine
- Swelling of a vertebral joint caused by trauma or lack of normal movement in the joint
- Degenerative joint disease caused by years of abnormal joint function
- Muscle spasmin, particularly of the piriformis muscle in the buttocks
